Through holistic health that focuses on faith, physiology, common sense, and a little humor, I help you understand and battle chronic health conditions.

I’m TaShawn Davis, Registered Nurse and Holistic Health Coach, and after more than two decades working in healthcare, I began to see a pattern. Many people are struggling with fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance, yet very few understand the simple physiology behind what’s happening inside their bodies.

On this podcast, I break down complex health topics into simple, practical conversations so you can understand how sugar, insulin resistance, and metabolic health affect the way your body functions.

Each episode helps you connect the dots between what you eat, how your body responds, and how to stabilize your blood sugar for lasting results. You’ll learn how insulin resistance impacts your energy, weight, and overall health—and how to improve it using practical strategies like intermittent fasting, low-carb, ketosis, carnivore, stress reduction, and any dietary preference, and more, so you can restore your energy and support long-term health.

If you’re ready to understand your body, break the cycle of sugar cravings, and start building real health beyond weight loss, with faith and confidence, you’re in the right place.

So grab your favorite sugar-free drink, settle in, and let’s chat about it!.

When the Brain Can’t Draw a Clock: Can Ketones Support Alzheimer’s Brain Health? | Dr. Mary Newport
What if a simple clock-drawing task revealed that the brain was struggling—and what if the brain could use another fuel source?
In Episode 35 of Health Beyond Weight Loss, TaShawn Davis, RN, speaks with Dr. Mary Newport about Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, ketones, MCT oil, nutritional ketosis, and the connection between nutrition and brain health.
Dr. Newport shares the personal experience that led her to investigate whether ketones and medium-chain triglycerides may provide an alternative fuel source for the brain. This conversation offers families, caregivers, nurses, assisted-living professionals, and healthcare educators a compassionate discussion about Alzheimer’s brain health, healthy aging, nutrition, and informed care.
In This Episode
Dr. Mary Newport’s personal journey with Alzheimer’s disease
What a clock-drawing task may reveal about cognitive function
Why the brain may use ketones as an alternative fuel
MCT oil and medium-chain triglycerides
Nutritional ketosis and brain health
Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline
Nutrition, memory, and healthy aging
Questions caregivers and families may want to ask
Why early education and compassionate conversations matter
How healthcare professionals and assisted-living teams can support families with greater understanding
Why This Conversation Matters
When someone begins experiencing memory loss or changes in thinking, families often feel confused, frightened, and unprepared. They may wonder whether nutrition has a role in brain health, whether the brain can use alternative fuel sources, and what questions they should bring to a healthcare professional.
Dr. Newport’s experience invites us to look more closely at the relationship between metabolism, nutrition, ketones, and cognitive health—while remaining honest about what is known, what is still being studied, and why individualized medical guidance is essential.
This episode is not about making promises. It is about learning, asking better questions, and giving families access to thoughtful education and hope.
Key Takeaways
Changes in memory and thinking deserve attention and compassionate evaluation.
The brain can use more than one type of fuel, including ketones.
MCT oil is one nutritional source that may increase ketone availability, but individual responses vary.
Nutrition is one part of a much larger conversation involving genetics, medical history, sleep, medications, inflammation, activity, and overall metabolic health.
Families should not make major dietary or supplement changes without discussing them with a qualified healthcare professional.
Caregivers and assisted-living professionals need practical, respectful education about nutrition and brain health.
Hope and good medical care can exist together without overstating what any one strategy can accomplish.
TaShawn’s Home-Care Perspective
As a Registered Nurse and longtime home-care professional, TaShawn understands that health education must reach beyond the clinic. Families, caregivers, residents, and staff need information they can understand and use when making decisions about daily meals, medications, safety, independence, and quality of life.
Health Beyond Weight Loss is committed to bringing metabolic health education to communities that are often overlooked—including older adults, caregivers, assisted-living residents, healthcare workers, and underserved families.
Questions to Discuss With Your Healthcare Professional
What could be contributing to changes in memory or thinking?
Should medications, nutrition, sleep, blood sugar, or other health factors be reviewed?
Could changes in carbohydrate intake or MCT oil be appropriate for my situation?
Are there medication interactions, digestive concerns, or other safety considerations?
How should blood glucose, ketones, hydration, and nutrition be monitored?
What support does the caregiver or family need?

Have you fallen off your healthy diet and wondered how to get back on track without starting completely over?
One unplanned meal, difficult week, elevated blood-sugar reading, or return of sugar cravings can make you feel as though you have ruined all your progress. But one setback does not mean your healthy lifestyle, low-carb diet, weight-loss journey, or metabolic-health goals have failed.
In Episode 34 of the Health Beyond Weight Loss Podcast, Registered Nurse and Metabolic Health Educator TaShawn Davis, RN, shares the painful mistake she made after interviewing physician and author Dr. Mary Newport: TaShawn forgot to press record.
The conversation happened—but the recording didn’t.
TaShawn explains how she moved through disappointment and embarrassment, accepted responsibility, and found the humility to ask for another opportunity. Dr. Newport graciously agreed to return for another interview.
This experience revealed a powerful lesson that also applies to improving blood sugar, insulin resistance, sugar cravings and metabolic health:
A setback is an event—not your identity.
If you have stopped following your healthy diet, low-carb lifestyle, keto diet, exercise routine, or blood-sugar plan, this episode will help you evaluate what happened, release the shame, and take the next appropriate step.
IN THIS EPISODE
✔️ What happened when TaShawn forgot to record her interview with Dr. Mary Newport
✔️ Why embarrassment can prevent us from asking for help or beginning again
✔️ The difference between experiencing one setback and creating a repeated pattern
✔️ Why one unplanned meal does not erase all your previous progress
✔️ How sugar cravings, stress, sleep, habits, and your food environment can affect dietary choices
✔️ Why understanding insulin resistance and blood-sugar patterns can support more informed decisions
✔️ How to restart a healthy diet without punishing yourself
✔️ Why shame rarely produces sustainable lifestyle change
✔️ How humility, personal responsibility and grace can work together
✔️ A faith-based perspective on falling, rising and faithfully stewarding your health
✔️ The five-step RESET method for continuing after a health setback
THE RESET METHOD
R — RECOGNIZE WHAT HAPPENED
Describe the event honestly without turning it into your identity.
Instead of saying, “I am a failure,” acknowledge the specific choice or situation that occurred.
E — EXAMINE THE SITUATION
Consider what contributed to the setback.
Were you hungry, stressed, tired, emotionally overwhelmed, unprepared, or surrounded by foods that are difficult for you to moderate?
S — SIMPLIFY THE NEXT STEP
You do not have to repair your entire health journey in one day.
Focus on the next appropriate action available to you.
E — EXTEND GRACE WITHOUT ABANDONING RESPONSIBILITY
Grace does not mean pretending your choices do not matter.
It means refusing to use one mistake as a weapon against yourself.
T — TRUST THE PROCESS AND CONTINUE
Do not wait until next Monday, next month or the beginning of another challenge.
Begin with your next decision.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
• One unplanned meal does not automatically erase your previous progress.
• One blood-sugar reading does not provide the complete picture of your metabolic health.
• A setback should provide information—not become your identity.
• Understanding the circumstances surrounding a setback can help you prepare differently next time.
• Grace and personal responsibility can exist together.
• Sustainable behavior change requires more than shame or willpower.
• You may not need a completely different goal. You may simply need to take the next right step.
• One setback does not cancel the mission.
A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT
If you have been avoiding your physician because you are embarrassed about your blood sugar, make the appointment.
If you stopped checking your glucose because you are afraid of what you might see, talk with your healthcare team about an appropriate monitoring plan.
If you regained weight, that does not erase what you previously learned.
If your sugar cravings returned, begin examining what changed.
If you stopped following your plan, choose one appropriate action you can take today.
You do not have to solve your entire future at once.
You only need to stop allowing one chapter to write the ending.

Why Doesn't My Doctor Test My Fasting Insulin? What Your Blood Work May Be Missing
Have you ever been told your blood work was "normal"... but you still didn't feel like yourself?
If you've struggled with stubborn weight gain, fatigue, blood sugar swings, cravings, high blood pressure, brain fog, or recurring health concerns, you may have wondered if your lab work is telling the whole story.
In this episode of the Health Beyond Weight Loss Podcast, Registered Nurse and Metabolic Health Educator TaShawn Davis, RN, explains what a fasting insulin test is, how it differs from A1C and fasting glucose, and why understanding your blood work can help you have more informed conversations with your healthcare team.
You'll also learn what an A1C really measures, why red blood cell lifespan matters, factors that can influence A1C results, and why no single blood test should ever be interpreted in isolation.
Whether you're living with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, metabolic syndrome, obesity, fatty liver disease, or unexplained fatigue, this episode will help you better understand the purpose and limitations of common metabolic lab tests.
In This Episode
✔ What a fasting insulin test measures
✔ Why fasting insulin is different from blood sugar
✔ What your A1C actually measures
✔ Why red blood cells matter when interpreting A1C
✔ Conditions that can influence A1C results
✔ The difference between fasting glucose, A1C, and fasting insulin
✔ What laboratory reference ranges really mean
✔ Why "normal" lab results don't always answer every clinical question
✔ Why understanding your blood work empowers better conversations with your healthcare provider
Key Takeaways
• A1C reflects average blood sugar over approximately the previous 2–3 months because glucose attaches to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
• Fasting glucose provides a snapshot of blood sugar at one point in time.
• Fasting insulin measures the hormone that helps regulate blood sugar—it is not the same as glucose.
• Some clinicians use fasting insulin as one piece of a broader metabolic assessment, although it is not a routine screening test in many current clinical guidelines.
• Blood tests are most useful when interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history, physical findings, and other laboratory results.
• Education helps patients become active partners in their healthcare.

What Is Insulin Resistance? Could It Start Years Before Prediabetes?
Could insulin resistance begin years before you're ever told you have prediabetes?
Many people believe insulin resistance and prediabetes are the same thing—but they're not. In this episode, Registered Nurse and Metabolic Health Educator TaShawn Davis, RN, explains what insulin resistance is, why it matters, and why understanding your body may be one of the most important steps you can take toward improving your metabolic health.
You'll also hear the story of a woman who thought feeling tired, forgetful, and "slower" was simply part of getting older—until one conversation changed her perspective.

Could understanding one hormone change the way you think about your entire body?
Most people think insulin has just one job: controlling blood sugar.
But insulin is one of the hardest-working hormones in the human body. It helps move nutrients into cells, communicates with your liver, supports muscle repair, coordinates energy storage, and helps your body respond to the food you eat.
In this episode of Health Beyond Weight Loss, Registered Nurse TaShawn Davis, RN, breaks down the 7 essential jobs of insulin using simple, practical analogies that make physiology easy to understand.
You'll also hear the inspiring story of Louis, a gentleman I coached live on the radio for 14 weeks. During a recent podcast interview, he shared how much his life has changed. Friends noticed he was glowing, had more energy, and seemed happier. His story reminds us that understanding our bodies can lead to hope and healthier choices.
This episode is not about blaming insulin.
It's about appreciating the incredible way God designed our bodies and understanding why this remarkable hormone is so important.
In This Episode
✅ Why insulin is much more than a "blood sugar hormone"
✅ The 7 important jobs insulin performs every day
✅ How insulin helps move glucose into many cells for energy
✅ Why your body stores extra energy—and why that's part of a healthy design
✅ How insulin supports muscle growth and tissue repair
✅ The relationship between insulin and your liver
✅ Why insulin is considered a hormone messenger
✅ Louis' inspiring health journey and what we can learn from it
✅ Why understanding physiology can replace fear with hope
Key Takeaways
🧠 Insulin is essential for normal metabolism and healthy body function.
🍽️ Insulin helps your body respond to the nutrients you eat.
💪 Insulin supports muscle repair by helping many cells take up amino acids after meals.
🫀 Your liver and insulin work together to help maintain normal blood glucose between meals.
⚖️ Understanding insulin helps you better understand your body—not fear it.
🙏 God designed the human body with incredible wisdom. Learning physiology helps us become better stewards of our health.

Could Your Medications Be Affecting Your Memory? The Questions Every Patient Should Ask
Could brain fog or memory loss be about more than just getting older?
Many people assume forgetfulness, mental fatigue, or difficulty concentrating are simply part of aging.
But what if it's time to ask a different question?
As a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of nursing experience, I've spent years caring for patients in their homes. Before every visit, I would sit in my car reviewing their chart. Time after time, I'd see memory loss or dementia listed among their diagnoses—and then I'd notice a familiar pattern in the medication list.
Not because medications are bad.
Not because anyone had done anything wrong.
But because they reminded me to ask a simple question:
"Are we only treating symptoms, or are we also asking why those symptoms developed in the first place?"
In this episode of Health Beyond Weight Loss, we discuss seven common medications (or medication categories) that often lead to important conversations about sleep, nutrition, metabolism, inflammation, insulin resistance, and brain health.
This episode is not about stopping medications.
It's about understanding your body, partnering with your healthcare provider, and learning how to ask better questions.
In This Episode
✅ Why every medication tells a story
✅ The home health nursing experience that changed how I view chronic disease
✅ Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and acetylcholine: Why long-term use deserves a conversation
✅ Proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec®, Nexium®, Protonix®): stomach acid, vitamin B12, magnesium, and the gut-brain connection
✅ Statins and cholesterol: Why cholesterol is essential for healthy cells, hormones, and brain function
✅ Anti-anxiety medications and cognitive health
✅ Prescription sleep medications versus restorative sleep
✅ Opioid pain medications and mental clarity
✅ Polypharmacy: Why medication reviews become increasingly important as medications add up
✅ Why insulin resistance may be one piece of the bigger picture for some people
Key Takeaways
🧠 Every medication tells a story.
💊 Medications often treat symptoms while creating an opportunity to ask better questions about the underlying cause.
😴 Better sleep begins by understanding why you aren't sleeping.
🔥 Chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and metabolic dysfunction can influence multiple body systems—not just blood sugar.
❤️ The goal isn't to fear medication—it's to understand your body.
🙏 God designed our bodies beautifully. Understanding physiology helps us become better stewards of our health.

Cholesterol and the Brain
Although cholesterol often receives negative attention, it plays an essential role in cell membranes, hormone production, vitamin D synthesis, bile acid production, and normal brain structure and function. Why Can't I Lose Weight? Could Insulin Resistance, Blood Sugar, Hormones, or Your Lab Work Be the Missing Piece?
You've cut calories.
You've exercised.
You've tried low-fat.
You've counted calories.
You've walked every day.
So...why isn't the weight coming off?
If you've ever asked, "Why can't I lose weight?", you're not alone. Millions of people struggling with weight loss, insulin resistance, blood sugar, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, fatigue, inflammation, or hormone imbalances are asking the same question.
In this episode of Health Beyond Weight Loss, TaShawn Davis, RN—Registered Nurse with over 20 years of nursing experience, Holistic Health Coach, Speaker, and Author—shares seven reasons your body may not be responding the way you expected.
You'll also hear a powerful patient story that illustrates how good intentions don't always produce good physiology and why understanding how your body works is often more important than simply trying harder.
If you've tried diet after diet without lasting success, this episode may completely change how you think about weight loss, metabolic health, insulin resistance, and blood sugar.
In This Episode
✔️ Why weight loss isn't always about calories
✔️ Could insulin resistance be preventing weight loss?
✔️ The first question I ask every coaching client
✔️ Important lab work to discuss with your healthcare provider
✔️ Why consistency matters more than perfection
✔️ Can eating too little actually slow your progress?
✔️ The connection between hormones, metabolism, and weight
✔️ Why understanding physiology changes everything
✔️ A biblical perspective on wisdom, stewardship, and caring for the body God has given us
Questions to Ask Yourself
• What have I already tried?
• How long did I actually stay consistent?
• What worked?
• What didn't?
• Have I evaluated my blood sugar, fasting insulin, or thyroid function?
• Am I chasing another diet...or trying to understand my body?
Sometimes the best next step isn't another weight-loss program.
It's asking better questions.
Suggested Labs to Discuss With Your Healthcare Provider
Depending on your personal health history, your healthcare provider may recommend tests such as:
🩸 Fasting Insulin
🩸 Hemoglobin A1C
🩸 Fasting Glucose
🩸 C-Peptide
🩸 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
🩸 Lipid Panel (including Triglycerides and HDL)
🩸 hs-CRP (High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein)
🩸 Vitamin D
🩸 Ferritin
🩸 Thyroid Panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4)
These tests should always be interpreted within the context of your overall health and in partnership with your healthcare provider.

Can Type 2 Diabetes, Prediabetes & Insulin Resistance Be Reversed?
If you've ever searched online for answers about type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, or how to lower blood sugar naturally, you've probably discovered one thing…
Everyone says something different.
One expert says to eat more whole grains.
Another says reduce carbohydrates.
One says fruit is unlimited.
Another says be careful with fruit because of its impact on blood sugar.
One says type 2 diabetes is progressive.
Others are publishing research showing that many people can achieve type 2 diabetes remission through intensive lifestyle intervention.
So who should you believe?
In this episode of Health Beyond Weight Loss, TaShawn Davis, RN—Registered Nurse with over 20 years of nursing experience, Holistic Health Coach, Speaker, and Author—helps you cut through the confusion surrounding blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, metabolic health, and diabetes remission.
You'll hear the true story of a coaching client who had lived with type 2 diabetes for over a decade, struggled with diabetic neuropathy and repeated episodes of extremely high blood sugar, and finally discovered that one small daily habit was preventing the progress she had been praying for.
This episode will help you learn how to evaluate health advice, understand why individualized coaching matters, and gain confidence in making informed decisions about your metabolic health.
In This Episode
✔️ Can type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and insulin resistance be improved through lifestyle changes?
✔️ Why conflicting nutrition advice keeps so many people stuck
✔️ Blood sugar myths that may be slowing your progress
✔️ Why "natural" doesn't always mean blood sugar friendly
✔️ How personalized coaching helps identify hidden obstacles
✔️ Why understanding physiology matters more than memorizing food lists
✔️ Practical questions to ask before following health advice
✔️ A biblical perspective on wisdom, discernment, and stewardship
Key Takeaways
🩸 Confusion delays progress.
📚 Education builds confidence.
🩺 Your health deserves an individualized approach.
💚 Consistency almost always beats perfection.
